Debt Management

Communicate With Your Creditors

Creditors dislike it when a customer pretends they never received past due notices or act apathetically when questioned about their overdue account. You will force your creditors to collect through the courts if you ignore your obligations. Communicate with your creditors and they may reduce your payments, extend the time to pay or make other reasonable adjustments to help you out.  Creditors don't want to lose a customer, especially if they believe you are making a good faith effort to meet your obligations.

Write to your creditors or speak to them personally to explain your situation. If it's a temporary job loss or a more permanent problem, most creditors will work with you. Tell them what actions you are taking to meet your bills:

  • Do you plan to sell your house, borrow from relatives or get a part-time job?
  • Are you looking for a better job or will disability benefits begin soon?
